Industrial production in Germany declined by 2.4% month-over-month in December 2024, reversing a downwardly revised 1.3% growth in the previous month and surpassing market forecasts of a 0.6% drop. It was the steepest decrease since July, dragged by lower output from the automotive industry (-10.0%), and machine maintenance and assembly (-10.5%). By contrast, production rose robustly in the pharmaceutical industry (11.6%). Production contracted for capital goods (-4.7%) and intermediate goods (-3.3%) but rose for consumer goods (0.9%). Meanwhile, output in energy-intensive industrial branches declined by 3.1%. On a less volatile three-month-on-three-month basis, production dropped by 0.9% in October to December from the prior three months. On an annual basis, industrial production shrank by 3.1% in December, accelerating from the prior 2.8% fall.
