India and the U.S. are close to finalizing a long-stalled trade deal that would cut U.S. tariffs on Indian imports from 50% to 15–16%, India's Mint reported. The agreement, centered on energy and agriculture, may see India gradually lower Russian crude oil imports. U.S. President Donald Trump said he spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, focusing on trade, and noted that “energy was also part of our discussion,” with Modi assuring him India would limit Russian oil purchases. India may also increase imports of non-GMO U.S. corn and soymeal, and the deal could include a mechanism for periodic tariff and market access reviews. Finalization is expected at the ASEAN Summit this month, the local media said.
