Ireland’s trade surplus widened to EUR 6.2 billion in August 2024 from EUR 5.8 billion in the corresponding month of 2023, as exports rose more than imports. Exports grew by 7.5% yoy to EUR 17.3 billion amid increases for medical & pharmaceutical products (+19.9% to €8,205 million), electrical machinery & equipment (+64.5% to €1,025 million), and essential oils, perfume materials, toilet & cleansing preparations (+22.7% to €939 million). Shipments expanded to the USA (+30.1%) and Germany (+24.1%). In the meantime, imports increased by 8.3% to EUR 11.2 billion mainly due to higher purchases of medical & pharmaceutical products (+79.2% to €1,805 million), office machines & automatic data processing machines (+153% to €893 million), and other transport equipment (+22.8% to €1,488 million). Arrivals grew the most from Germany (+136.2%), and the USA (+20.2%).
