The questionnaire focuses on the current trend of order books, production and inventories, short-term forecasts on order books, production, prices and the general economic situation. The business confidence index is adjusted for seasonal effects and fixed to a base year of 2005. The value 100 indicates no evolution in business sentiment, a value over 100 shows increasing confidence and a value under 100 indicates low expectations.

The manufacturing confidence index in Italy fell by 0.7 points to 85.8 in December of 2024, equaling the near four-year low touched in October and slightly below market expectations of 86. The drop took place amid a faster decline in current new orders (-22.5 vs -21.9 in November), driving production to tank faster (-19.3 vs -18.7) as stocks of finished goods rose to a one-year high (4.4 vs 2.1). The lower demand drove firms to grew more pessimistic about future business, with expectations of new orders slowing (0.4 vs 0.8), although expectations of production fell slower (-0.8 vs -1.4). Also, expectations on the overall economic backdrop fell to a 13-month low (-17.3 vs -13.1).
