In Japan, Foreign Exchange Reserves are the foreign assets held or controlled by the country central bank. The reserves are made of gold or a specific currency. They can also be special drawing rights and marketable securities denominated in foreign currencies like treasury bills, government bonds, corporate bonds and equities and foreign currency loans.

Japan’s foreign reserves declined by $8.28 billion to $1.12 trillion in December 2024, hitting the lowest level since July. Total reserve assets were broken down into foreign currency reserves ($1.08 trillion), IMF reserve position ($10,199 million), SDRs ($57,197 million), gold ($71,013 million) and other reserve assets ($15,169 million). In a recent disclosure, Japan's finance ministry revealed it spent 5.53 trillion yen in July for foreign exchange interventions aimed at supporting the yen.
