Japan’s unemployment rate fell slightly to 2.4% in February 2025 from 2.5% in the previous month, defying forecasts for no change. The number of unemployed declined by 3.4% or 60,000 to 1.68 million while employment also fell by 0.2% or 110,000 to 68.16 million. The labor force dropped as well by 0.2% or 150,000 to 69.86 million, and those detached from the labor force rose by 0.3% or 100,000 to 39.91 million. The non-seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate stood at 63.2% in February. Meanwhile, the jobs-to-applications ratio edged down to 1.24 in February from 1.26 in the previous month, despite forecasts for no change.
