The Netherlands’ trade surplus narrowed to EUR 12.45 billion in March 2025 from EUR 13.33 billion a year earlier. Imports advanced by 3.7% year-on-year to EUR 59.15 billion, driven by increased purchases from both EU (3.3%) and non-EU countries (4%). Among commodities, notable gains were seen in food and live animals (18%), raw materials (8.2%), and chemical products (14.1%). Meanwhile, exports grew at a softer pace of 1.7% to EUR 71.6 billion, with sales rising to both EU (0.9%) and non-EU countries (3%). Exports growth was particularly strong in food and live animals (11.4%), animal and vegetable oils (12.8%), and chemical products (10.4%). For the first three months of the year, the trade surplus decreased to EUR 34.43 billion from EUR 36.45 billion in the corresponding period last year.
