Sri Lanka's manufacturing PMI dropped sharply to 40.1 in April 2025 from 63.9 in March, the lowest in two years and consistent with seasonal contraction. The fall was primarily driven by a steep decline in production (30 vs 70.2 in March) due to fewer working days. New orders (36.5 vs 71.2) also contracted significantly, reflecting the waning festive season demand, particularly in the food and beverage sector. In line with the declines in production and new orders, the stock of purchases also fell (41 vs 62), and employment (44.9 vs 51.9) declined as manufacturers scaled back temporary staff following the end of seasonal production. Meanwhile, suppliers’ delivery time (57 vs 56.3) lengthened further, mainly due to festive season-related supply chain disruptions.
