Sweden’s trade deficit narrowed to SEK 5.3 billion in August 2024 from SEK 7.8 billion in the same month a year earlier and compared to market forecasts of a SEK 5.9 billion surplus. Year-on-year, exports fell 5.1% to SEK 150.3 billion, with sales plunging to the EU (-10.2% to SEK 80.2 billion), while rising to the non-EU countries (1.4% to SEK 70.1 billion). In the meantime, imports dropped by a faster 6.4% to SEK 155.6 billion, due to decreased purchases from both EU (-7.7% to SEK 100.5 billion) and non-EU countries (-3.8% to SEK 55.1 billion). On a seasonally adjusted basis, the country’s trade surplus slightly rose to SEK 6.9 billion compared to SEK 6.8 billion in July. Considering January to August, the trade surplus widened to SEK 53.4 billion, notably higher than the SEK 28.1 billion recorded in the corresponding period last year.
