UK construction output rose by 0.2% year-on-year in January 2025, missing market expectations of 0.4% and slowing sharply from 1.5% in the previous month. While marking a sixth consecutive month of increase, it was the weakest growth since last October, weighed down by subdued new work (0.1% vs 1.9%) and a slowdown in repair and maintenance activity (0.4% vs 1.0%). On a monthly basis, construction output contracted by 0.2%, matching December’s decline. The drop was primarily driven by a 0.7% fall in new work, reversing a 1.1% gain in the previous month, while repair and maintenance rebounded 0.4% after a 1.8% decline in December. Sector-wise, three out of nine categories saw declines, with private commercial new work (-6.1%) and private housing new work (-1.8%) being the biggest drags.
