Building permits in the United States decreased by 0.7% to a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 1.483 million in December of 2024, beating market expectations of 1.46 million. Permits for buildings with five or more units dropped by 5.8% to an annualized rate of 437 thousand, while single-family permits increased by 1.6% to 992 thousand. Across different US regions, there were decreases in permits in Midwest (-1.4% to 215 thousand), and the West (-6.6% to 313 thousand), while increases were seen in the Northeast (5% to 147 thousand) and the South (1% to 808 thousand).
