Building permits in the United States fell by 3.3% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.406 million in July 2024, revised higher from a preliminary estimate of 1.396 million. Approvals of units in buildings with five units or more tumbled by 10.7% to a rate of 416K (vs 12.4% to a rate of 408K in the preliminary release) and single-family authorizations went up by 0.2% to 941K (vs -0.1% to 938K). Across different US regions, there were decreases in permits in the Midwest (-11.8% to 184K vs -12.6% to 181K), the South (-4.6% to 773K vs -4.2% to 776K) and the West (-3.8% to 308K vs -5.3% to 303K), while increases were reported in the Northeast (20.5% to 141K vs 16.2% to 136K).
