The annual core consumer price inflation rate in the United States, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, eased further to an over three-year low of 3.2% in July 2024, down from 3.3% in the prior month, in line with market forecasts. The shelter index, accounting for over two thirds of the total 12-month increase in the all items less food and energy index, rose by 5.1% in July, easing from 5.2% in June. Other indexes with slower increases over the last year included motor vehicle insurance (+18.6% vs +19.5%) and personal care (+3.2% vs +3.4%). On a monthly basis, core consumer prices rose by 0.2% from the previous month in July, up from a 0.1% increase in June, matching market estimates.
