New orders for manufactured goods in the US sank by 0.9% from the previous month to $578.5 billion in December of 2024, extending the revised 0.8% drop in the previous month, and firmly below market expectations of a 0.7% decline to mark the sharpest monthly drop since June. Decreases in orders were substantial for transportation goods (-7.4% to $86.1 billion) due to a plunge in nondefense aircraft orders (-45.7% to $8 billion), in addition to primary metals (-0.5% to $26.8 billion). On the other hand, orders rose for computers and electronic products (0.3% to $25.3 billion) and fabricated metal products (1.1% to $37.3 billion), while remaining broadly unchanged for machinery (0.1% to $37.5 billion).
