Initial jobless claims in the United States fell by 13,000 to 228,000 on the week ending May 3rd, slightly below market expectations of 230,000, to mark a sharp contrast with the two-month high from the previous week. In the meantime, outstanding unemployment claims fell by 29,000 to 1,879,000, easing from the over three-year high halfway through April. The result continued to reflect a resilient labor market when compared to historical levels, aligned with the assessment by Federal Reserve Chairman Powell in the central bank's latest decision. In the meantime, initial unemployment claims filed under programs for Federal government employees, which have been under close scrutiny due to firings by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), fell by 2 to 468.
