Retail sales in the US increased 0.6% month-over-month in June 2025, after declines in the prior two months, and beating market expectations of a 0.1% gain. The largest increases were seen in sales at miscellaneous store retailers (1.8%), motor vehicles and parts (1.2%), building material and garden equipment (0.9%), and clothing (0.9%). Other gains were seen in sales at food services & drinking places (0.6%), food & beverage stores (0.5%), health and personal care (0.5%) and general merchandise stores (0.5%), nonstore retailers (0.4%), and sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, and book stores (0.2%). On the other hand, sales flattened at gasoline stations and declined 0.1% at both furniture and electronics stores. Meanwhile, sales excluding food services, auto dealers, building materials stores and gasoline stations, which are used to calculate GDP, were up 0.5%, following a downwardly revised 0.2% increase and also above expectations of 0.3%.
